This is so embarrassing for the Giants. That's some little league shit right there.

ABSOLUTELY COMICAL!!: the announcers got it COMPLETELY WRONG. They should have just done THEIR jobs and leave the rules alone and cut to commercial break (I would have paid to see the look on their faces when Posey came back to the plate again!!!)......TOO FUNNY!!.........

msolec2000

msolec2000 . 9 months ago

For those saying what to do if Posey made an out, let it stand (Other than a sac fly, I guess). Proper batter is now Pence. If Sandoval goes to bat, you have the same situation again. If Sandoval goes to bat and makes out #3, then the proper batter to lead the 2nd inning is Posey. If Pence goes to lead the inning, we have the same situation yet again.

What a douche way to get a run eliminated. On a bullshit technicality.

It would have been funny if posey(batting in order) doubled again

Smart how Mattingly told the ump after Posey hit the rbi double

chaosawaits

chaosawaits . 11 months ago

What made this even harder to swallow as a Giants fan was that this was payback by Mattingly for when Bochy made him change his pitcher for making two trips to the mound.

I think the umpire's were talking about dinner and cocktail plans for after the game. An MLB plate umpire doesn't need help interpreting or enforcing the batting out of order rule. It's fairly simple. Batter who fails to bat in his proper slot in the batting order is out if an improper batter completes an at bat and the defense appeals before a pitch or play.

Sucks

Michael Heathman

Michael Heathman . 2 years ago

Can you give me a casebook play or a manual reference that teaches that the defense loses the ability to make an appeal after a play even when the offense initiated the action. I.E./ the ball is live and the pitcher throws to a base to appeal or is about to throw to a base when a runner takes off and runs to his next base and the pitcher throws or runs toward the runner and the offense makes a play on the runner instead of making an appeal. Has the offense now lost the right to appeal? Are official rules the same as Fed?

Smart play by Mattingly to let Buster complete the AB.

Baseball is a pastime. It's not suppose to be on a clock in a hurry. If you don't like the pace of mlb you can always watch soccer. Why did a mlb plate umpire need a crew conference to enforce batting out of order?

spencer severson

spencer severson . 3 years ago

Posey isn't out technically it is ruled as the batter who was supposed to bat as out on a groundout to the catcher...

Michael Heathman

Michael Heathman . 3 years ago

Getting the crew together is the norm now. I wish Jim Joyce would have got together with the entire crew when he made the worst call in baseball history. In St. Louis in the first inning of game one of the World Series Dana DeMuth kicked the shit out of a "transfer" call at second base. The other 5 umpires knew the call was wrong. I'm not sure who called the umpire huddle. May have been the plate umpire. May have been the crew chief, DeMuth, who butchered a possession call on a force out. The call was overturned. This was the first time a crew got together and overturned a simple force play judgement call. Getting together is a positive change but in this case it's not a judgement call and the get together delays the game. Baseball is trying to shorten games. An mlb umpire should be able to handle batting out of order quickly and on his own.

My kids' little league team does this all the time. Just surprised it happens in the majors.

John Stilwell

So who was the next batter, the guy skipped or the one after the one that hit out of turn?

Xman3000

Xman3000 . 3 years ago

Bullshit

Michael Heathman

Michael Heathman . 3 years ago

The batter who is next in the order bats after the batter who should have been batting is called out. Posey only bats next because he is next in the batting order.

Michael Heathman

Michael Heathman . 3 years ago

You can't have an out without an official at bat. Sandoval is responsible for batting in order. He is called out even though he's in the on deck circle. Pose y'all hit is nullified and he bats again as the 4th batting slot is now up at bat. Why does an M.L.B. Umpire need to get the crew together to enforce batting out of order?

Michael Heathman

Michael Heathman . 3 years ago

The appeal must be made before the next pitch or play. What if the offense initiates action that results in the defense making a play; does the defense lose its right to appeal. I say no. Discuss.

Lindsay Coyle

Lindsay Coyle . 3 years ago

Posey was not called out. The proper batter is declared out.

richard grace

richard grace . 3 years ago

they need to change the rules because coaches intentially wait for the wrong batter too hit before they argue out of order because they know the batter will be out...they need to change that

Matt X

Matt X . 3 years ago

Just wow. How the fuck do you bat out of order? This is the BIGS lineup is on the giant jumbo-tron.

Michael Heathman

Michael Heathman . 3 years ago

Good thing Rosenthal is there to get it right. Tim McCarver is an embarrassment to anyone who hired him. Actually, both announcers said Posey was out. That's incorrect. Posey actually bats 2 times in a row. The batter who should have been in the box is out. The #4 batter hits after the #3 hitter is called out for not hitting in order.

carlmoore19

carlmoore19 . 4 years ago

At about 1:19, there is a remark about "the batter would be deemed out".  Not in this case.  Here, the batter hit one spot too early, and doubled, scoring the runner from 3rd base, and the opposing manager came out right then and discussed the batting order.  So the batter who was SUPPOSED to hit then was called out, the runner who scored had to go back to 3rd, and the double was nullified (the batter who hit it had to bat again, now in the proper order).

francobobfred

francobobfred . 4 years ago

What would have happened if Posey walked or was hit by pitch?

Joel Anderson

Joel Anderson . 4 years ago

The call was wrong! The rule is that if the batter takes at least one pitch in the wrong order, the order that he batted in is now the real order.

Now I'm curious...what happens if they don't appeal this, or don't realize it, but then they do after the Sandoval at bat, and if he got on also.  Can they challenge for both to be out?

What happens if Mattingly didn't go out at first and then Sandoval reaches base, THEN Mattingly appeals the improper batting order?

Vincent Cuttolo

Vincent Cuttolo . 4 years ago

When former Milwaukee skipper Tom Trebelhorn was still managing in the minors, he put up the wrong hitter in a key spot. The other manager said nothing, like Mattingly here. Now this hitter was short and his stance was a tight crouch. The pitcher went 3-0 on him, whereupon Trebelhorn called the hitter back, and put up the right one, now with a 3-0 count. Amazingly, no penalty and all legal. If one team bats out if order, the umps say nothing. If either manager corrects it during the plate appearance, the corect hitter goes up and assumes the count, with no penalty.

I was at that game and immediately knew he was out of order. Smart heads up move by Mattingly though I'll give him that
